Court of the Lord Lyon - Edinburgh

Based in Edinburgh, the Court of the Lord Lyon is Scotland’s centuries-old tribunal for heraldry, genealogy, and noble dignity. Headed by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, an office dating back at least to the 14th century, it regulates coats of arms, oversees state ceremonies, and ensures only those entitled may bear arms.
Unlike the College of Arms in England, the Lyon Court is a court of law, and its rulings carry the force of statute. Disputes over succession to titles, coats of arms, or clan chiefships are heard here, with evidence drawn from genealogical records, legal documents, and expert testimony. The Lyon may grant new arms, confirm claims to dormant dignities, or require that improperly assumed arms be corrected and registered.
In this way, the Court of the Lord Lyon ensures Scotland’s heraldic traditions remain both orderly and alive.
